The problem

A book of cryptid and mythological-creature stories written with a comic, theatrical tone. Illustrated too seriously it would read as horror; illustrated too loosely it would lose the folklore. The art had to land between menace and mischief, and stay consistent across a cast of very different creatures.

What I made

Illustrations for the book 'Dark Watchers' by Richard Stevenson — a cast of cryptids including the Naine Rouge, the Argopelter and the Crocodingo, plus the cover, each drawn to keep the stories' comic theatrics without losing the folklore edge.
